It is easily distinguished from S. pyrastri by the shape and colour of the lunules on the abdomen - these are yellow and the inner and outer ends of each lunule are the same distance from the base of the tergite (lunules whitish with lateral ends much further from the base in S. pyrastri).

This hoverfly is mostly encountered in coniferous woodland and heathland with pines. The larvae feed on pine aphids mostly.
