The so-called green veins on the underside of adults are, in fact, an illusion created by a subtle combination of yellow and black scales. The eggs are laid mostly on wild Brassicaceae, such as hedge mustard (Sisymbrium officinale), garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolate), cuckooflower (Cardamine pratensis), water-cress (Nasturtium officinale), charlock (Sinapis arvensis), large bitter-cress (Cardamine amara), wild cabbage (Brassica oleracea), and wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum), and so it is rarely a pest in gardens or field crops. The pupa overwinters.
